It has been awhile since my last note, to the people who are down here in Wonderland with me. Well it has been an interesting few days. I came across a two really fun but, a little odd twins.. If I remember right I think their names were Deetweedle and Dumtweedle. No, that's not right what were their names........ Oh I remember now they were Tweedledee and Tweedledum. They were a riot. So I hung out with them for a bit and they showed me a lot. But, I will get back to them at a later time. The most interesting thing that I came across was this caterpillar, and the strange thing was, he sounded like Professor Snape from Harry Potter, I hope you are smiling with that one. Anyway, this caterpillar was a laid back insect sitting on a leaf smoking up a cloud that just caught my eye. Now I know what some of you might be thinking at this point but, I assure you it was nothing bad at all. Every time this caterpillar blew out a cloud of smoke it was a different color. Well that at first made me want to go and check it out. As I was getting closer and closer the smoke did not look like smoke at all. It was the strangest thing I had seen in awhile. Now if you have been following my adventure now here in Wonderland you would know that was saying something. As I got closer and closer to the smoke I noticed that the caterpillar was not blowing smoke at all. The caterpillar was blowing words out of his tiny little pipe. Once I got close enough to talk to the caterpillar I asked, “Who are you!”. He took a big deep breath from his pipe and replied, “Who are you?”

Now this was just plan awesome I mean it was more than awesome. It was redonkeylously awesome. So, the very next thing that I asked the caterpillar was, “How did you do that?” He looked up at me and said, “Well my good boy, it is easier than you thought. All you have to do is go and look for a website called Wordle.” So, what is wordle you ask he. Funny that was the same question that I asked the caterpillar. He told me that Wordle was a sight were I could create my very own word clouds. A word cloud is a type of text that helps people quickly preceive what the most prominent terms are. When I went to walking around Wonderland to find out more about Wordle, i found out that there are a number if cool ways to use Wordle in a classroom. The coolest way for younger kids to use Wordle is to use it to write an “All About Me” at the start of the year. Another way to use it is to create a learning poster with the weeks spelling words on it. One more way to use Wordle is to use them to help with self-esteem and improve relationships in the class. One of the best things about this site was that it was absolutely free. Last before I left the Wordle website I created my very first word cloud about my travels in Wonderland so far.
So are wordle and word cloud the same thing, related, or completely different? I have been reading about these things on a few different blogs and I am unsure. I am also behind the times with this stuff so maybe that is why! However, you said that word clouds are ways to perceive the prominent terms quickly. If that is what they are used for, I could see how even I would find them a valuable tool.
ReplyDeleteKevin, before last class I had no idea what these word blobs were called. I've always thought Wordles were a good visual representation. I think your idea of having students use a wordle to write an "about me" is a great idea to get student engaged in technology and introduce themselves to others. Since this tech resource is free I will keep it in mind for my future education career both for personal use and for my students.
ReplyDeleteI went to check out Wordle, too, and had a great time! I love how you tied in the whole Wonderland theme with your Wordle word cloud. Like Jeanell, I like your suggestions for an "All About Me" poster at the beginning of the year. I had the most fun clicking on the "randomize" button to get the words to move around. Did you try that? How did you get the "Wonderland" to be the most prominent word in your word cloud? Was that just by accident, or was it because it is the longest word? Or, were you able to arrange it that way?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tool for the classroom! I had never heard about it before, and it's even better sense it is free. I could see how this could be used to help students see connections between words, and to help them showcase their creativity.
ReplyDeleteNice blog! Very interesting and way to stick to the theme. I like the idea of wordle and it will be a lot of fun to use them in the classroom.
